Keith Ferrazzi, Never Eat Alone

  • Relationship Action Plan
    • Three parts
      1. Develop the goals that will help you fulfill your mission.
      2. Connect those goals to the people, places, and things that will help you get the job done
      3. Determine the best way to reach out to the people who will help you to accomplish your goals
        • Find a way to be generous to each person you reach out to!
    • Write down your 3 year goal (A and B version), with
      • yearly checkpoints
      • quarterly (3-month) checkpoints

Lorin Hochstein, The problems that accountability can't fix

  • Two classes of problems that accountability cannot fix
    1. Coordination challenges. If the problem occurs at the interface of multiple teams, a higher-order supervisor needs to be responsible for addressing the coordination challenge (not one of the teams).
    2. Miscalibrated risk models. Think OceanGate scandal: Stockton Rush's model of risk was fatally wrong, which means that despite being maximally accountable (the captain), problems still occurred.
  • Double binds (resilience engineering): Occurs when a single component needs to satisfy conflicting or even opposing demands.
